I try to be eco-friendly by giving up driving to work by car. I believe that using cars every day is probably the biggest polluter. I live in a rather small town in England and it takes me half an hour to get to work. In comparison, I spend 25 minutes getting to work by car. However, for people who live in rural areas or suburbs where public transport is poor, it's not easy to give up their cars. But if you live in the city, it becomes much easier in most cases! One study shows that city dwellers who live in large urban areas have, on average, a lower environmental impact than those who live in big cities where it is very easy to get around without a car. Moreover, I also think that using an electric car is a good alternative if you can not imagine your life without your own car.

I am not a particularly environmentally friendly person, but I try to do my best. For example, I sort trash: I throw glass, paper, and plastic into three different bins. I also use recycled paper, bags, and bottles. I take public transportation to get to the place I need to go. Of course, if I have the same destination with someone, we can carpool. In addition, I turn off the lights when I do not need them and turn off the heat when it's rather warm outside. I also only use rechargeable batteries. In general, I do a lot of little things, and it may be just a drop in the ocean, however, what is an ocean but a multitude of drops.

I live in a pretty hot region in America, so buying water bottles is a common practice here. However, most water bottles end up in the ocean because many people do not recycle them properly. This leads to a high rate of pollution in our oceans and the environment as a whole, as one plastic bottle breaks down into 10,000 microplastics over time — and this microplastic pollution is incredibly difficult to clean up. With this in mind, I try to recycle or reuse all water bottles. I also visit homes in my neighbourhood to pick up plastic bottles from my neighbours. Most people just do not have time to go to special centres where the bottles are accepted and recycled. Reusing water bottles saves money in the long run because fewer bottles need to be purchased.

My work is closely related to travel, so I try to be environmentally friendly when I travel or before it. Before I leave my house, I unplug all my devices to save electricity. Even when electronic devices are turned off or in sleep mode, they still use energy. If I am gone too long, a lot of energy is wasted that could have otherwise been turned off. Before I leave for a business trip, I also check if any food items in the fridge are about to expire. If possible, I consume them before the expiry date, otherwise I donate them to those in need, thus avoiding food waste. The method of transportation has a big impact on the environment. Depending on the destination, it may be better to drive rather than to fly. For example, when I travel in Europe, I usually use the train because the railway system there is well developed.
