The first attempts to treat neurological disorders dates back to 1000 CE. In Muslim Spain, al-Zahrawi operated on patients with hydrocephalus (excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain) and with head and spinal injuries, but there was little progress in neural understanding until the 16th-century. In 1543, Flemish anatomist Andreas Vesalius published De Humani Corporis Fabrica (On the Structure of the Human Body), which included thorough (DESCRIBE) of the human brain.

The (GROW) understanding of brain structure and (NERVE) system gave scientists new means of studying neurological and psychological diseases. In 1817, British surgeon James Parkinson described the symptoms of six people suffering "the shaking palsy" (later renamed Parkinson's disease). Although he wrongly established the cause of the disease, his systematic and analytical approach was (SIGNIFY).

Parkinson's was one of several diseases studied between 1868 and 1891 by French clinical neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. Modern psychiatry also owes much to Charcot, who is (PROBABLE) best known for his use of hypnosis to study the symptoms of hysteria.
