Jack London, , was born in the slums of San Francisco in 1876. Because of the fact that his family was poor, he had to go to work at an early age to support his family.

Jack London was enrolled for a short time at the University of California at Berkeley, but he left it in the late 1890s because he joined the gold rush in the wild Yukon Territory in Canada. London never found gold, but his experiences in the harsh environment gave him ideas for his stories.
