Complete the spelling rules

We use Past Simple for actions which finished at a certain time in the past (e.g. yesterday, yesterday afternoon/morning/evening, last night/week/month, two days/weeks/months ago, etc.). The verb "to be", regular and irregular verbs have different past forms.

Regular verbs in Past Simple
Most verbs in English are regular. We make their past form in positive sentences with the help of ending -ed.

Visit — visited: Theyvisitedtheir parents last week.

Love — loved: Ilovedmy school when I was a child.

Stop — stopped: The busstoppednear my house an hour ago.

Study — studied: My sisterstudiedhard at school.

Play — played: Iplayedtennis yesterday.

Spelling:

  • We add -ed to most regular verbs. [ ].
  • Verbs ending in -e: add -d. [ ].
  • Verbs ending in consonant + -y: change -y into -i + -ed. [ ].
  • Verbs ending in vowel + -y: add -ed. [ ].
  • Verbs ending in one stressed vowel between two consonants: double the last consonant + -ed. [ ].
