Short adjectives (one syllable)

1. Add -er:

small → smaller

2. Double the final consonant in adjectives ending in a vowel and a consonant:

hot → hotter

3. In two-syllable adjectives ending in -y we change -y to -i before the ending -er:

happy → happier

Long adjectives (two or more syllables)

1. Add more and don't change the form of the adjective:

beautiful → more beautiful

Exceptions:

good → better

bad → worse

much, many → more

far → further/farther

When we compare two objects, we use "than":

This river is more beautiful than that lake.

The comparative degree

small → the smallest

Add the most and don't change the form of adjective:

beautiful → the most beautiful

Exceptions:

good → the best

bad → the worst

much, many → the most

far → the furthest/the farthest

We use the expressions "of all" and "in the world/class/group" with the superlative forms.

Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world.
