Ded Moroz and Snow Maiden are purely Soviet characters that have nothing to do with Christmas. They were invented during the reign of Stalin when the Soviet government banned the celebration of Christmas and offered people a new grandiose holiday—New Year. Santa Claus (Saint Nicholas) did not fit into the communist ideology, so his clone, Ded Moroz, was invented.

Christmas candy was invented in Germany in the 18th century. And not as a sweet gift for children, but as a means to calm and distract them during a long festive church service, so that they do not make noise and disturb the adults. The sweets were made in the form of long sticks, symbolising the staff of the shepherds and magi who came to worship the baby, Jesus. At first, the candies were completely white or yellow, but pastry chefs have learned to make them striped using the main colours of Christmas—white, red and green. And in the middle of the 20th century, a device was invented that made it possible to make curved candy "canes", and holiday sweets became the way we know and love them.

When the Christmas candy is turned over, it forms the first letter of the name of Jesus: J (Jesus).

The Christmas (New Year's) spruce, as we see it today, appeared in Germany in the 16th century. The tree brought into the house in honour of the holiday was hung with nuts and fruits so that the coming year would be full and fruitful. In general, even the ancient Egyptians and Romans loved to decorate their homes with wreaths from the paws of evergreen firs and pines, believing that this prolongs youth and strengthens health, and reminds themselves and their loved ones that spring will definitely return.

It is a reminder of the crown of thorns that Jesus wore in the last hours of his life. Red berries and other decorative elements of this colour are like drops of bloodshed by Jesus wounded by thorns. And also red is love. White (candles, ribbons; sometimes supplemented or replaced with silver)—the purity of the soul. The round shape of the wreath and the branch of an evergreen tree used for it mean eternal life, the continuity of generations. The gold decor is a symbol of the victory of good over evil, sunlight, strength, power and prosperity.

The tradition of hanging a Christmas stocking over the fireplace originated from legend and is associated with St Nicholas. According to legend, a poor man died in one village, leaving his three daughters without a piece of bread. Saint Nicholas heard the villagers talk about the unenviable fate of the girls and decided to help the poor family by doing it in secret. St Nicholas threw three pieces of gold into the chimney, which ended up in the girls' stockings, which were hung over the fireplace to dry. Now children hang Christmas stockings on their cribs or over the fireplace, waiting for Santa to order gifts.

December 26 is also a special and festive day. In the morning, all the children rush to the Christmas tree, under which are the cherished and long-awaited boxes with gifts from Santa Claus. Therefore, this day is called Boxing Day.

It is also called "plum pudding". In the Middle Ages, it was a sweet milk porridge, which by the middle of the 17th century was transformed into a dessert with the addition of eggs, dried fruits and alcohol. Nowadays, Christmas pudding is a mixture of boiled dried fruits, heavily seasoned, which is poured on top of the brandy on top of the dessert and set on fire for a few seconds. Traditionally, a few coins are put into the pudding—as a gift and a surprise for someone who breaks a tooth about such a "gift".
