Choose the correct options to complete the text

Hi, guys!

I desperately need your help! Can you give me some advice about what to do on a date? All my attempts look like a failure!

I [try|tried|had been trying|had tried] to go on a date last February 14. That was terrible! And here's why.

First of all, my girlfriend Kelly was really late. By the time she came, I [waited|was waiting|had been waiting|wait] for her for almost an hour! I brought her some flowers, and they [didn't look|hadn't looked|wasn't looking|not looked] good when she finally came.

Anyway, we met and headed to a cafe. I [chose|chosed|had chosen|was choosing] the cafe in advance, and I was very proud of my choice. That was a wonderful cafe in the heart of the city. However, when we came to the cafe, we [saw|had seen|was seeing|seed] a huge line of people. Only then I remembered that I had forgotten to book a table!

So we had to choose another place. Kelly suggested going to a tiny restaurant nearby. The interior looked very nice, but the prices were so high that I [can|caned|could|had could] hardly afford anything! I spent all my pocket money to buy some tea and a couple of desserts.

Finally, when we [walked|had walked|had been walking|were walking] home, Kelly asked me to tell her a joke. But when I did, she didn't like it at all! And she also said I didn't have any sense of humour!

Is it necessary to say that I was awfully upset?
