Based on Workbook p 5, ex 3 Listen to the interview with a doctor and complete the sentences InterviewerBarbara Heeley Doctors and specialists on the speech development of young children believe that watching television is very harmful for babies. Doctor Barbara Heeley is one of them. Welcome to our studio, Dr Heeley. Thanks for coming. And the first question to you — is television really so bad for young children? I'm absolutely sure of it. How much, in your view, should parents let their children watch television? Well, that depends on the age of their kids. Babies under one year old should not watch television at all. Children who are a bit older, two or three-year-old boys and girls, may watch television for no more than one hour a day. But why? I know that many children do watch television with great interest. Bright colours, moving pictures, flashing lights attract them. Yes, that's true. And nowadays, unfortunately, television is often being used as a babysitter, which is a very simple and very convenient way to make your child keep quiet. But our experiments show that television influences children's speech development negatively. Why? What are the results of your research? Watching television somehow prevents babies from learning to talk as early as they should. At three, such children have the language of two-year-olds. Is it really so serious? Very much so. It is quite difficult to get these young television viewers interested in toys. Parents and nannies stop talking to them, thus, these children are not being taught a basic vocabulary they usually get through conversations with their mothers and other adults. And the children whose language was below standard at the age of three could be really slow in their development in future. to watch televisionwatch televisionat allan houra dayit isa very simpleand convenient wayto keepbabies quietmight haveproblemswith theirspeech developmentcould beslowin theirdevelopmentin the future Doctors and specialists think it is harmful for young children .
