based on Unit 2, Reading ex. 9 Read the text and select its parts in the logical order Up to a third of the city was destroyed and more than 70 thousand people were made homeless. After the Great Fire of London people rebuilt their city. The city became larger. In the 11th century people of London usually built wooden houses and they were often near each other. Sometimes there were fires in the city, but they were usually fairly small. In 1666, a huge fire burned down most of London – because it was so big, it was called the Great Fire of London. Then the building next to the baker's house started burning. With strong winds, the fire spread quickly down Pudding Lane, towards the River Thames and London Bridge. It burnt for four days and destroyed many London houses, about 80% of the city. In the early hours of the morning of Sunday, September 2, fire broke out in Thomas Farriner's bakery in Pudding Lane. Londoners were sleeping in their beds. The king's baker and his wife were also sleeping in their house near London Bridge. Suddenly the baker's wife woke up in the middle of the night. She understood that their house was on fire.
