There was once a very beautiful girl called Hinemoa who lived on the shore of a great lake in New Zealand. Hinemoa's father was a local chief, a very important man. He loved his daughter so much that he didn't let anybody marry his Hinemoa. Many handsome young men had come to him to ask for her hand but no one of them was good enough for his daughter. Paragraph Two. One day Hinemoa's father invited his people and their neighbours for dinner. A lot of young men were present. They all danced and sang songs hoping to win the heart and hand of the young lady. The best dancer was a young man called Tutanekai who lived on a small island in the middle of the lake. When Hinemoa and Tutanekai saw each other, it was love at first sight. Paragraph Three. Day after day and night after night the young people thought about each other. One day Hinemoa told her father that she loved the handsome young man from the island. "Tutanekai is not good enough for you," said her father. "I'll never let you marry that man!" Every night the young man thought about Hinemoa and played his flute. The girl listened to this beautiful music and cried. Paragraph Four. Once the young people met and decided that they must be together. Tutanekai said he would come secretly at night and take the girl to his island. Hinemoa loved him but she loved her father too. So she decided to speak to him again. "Father, I love Tutanekai," she said. "I want to be his wife." These words made her father still angrier and he ordered his men to take away all the boats from the water so that his daughter couldn't go to the island in one of them. Paragraph Five. That night there was no moon. When Hinemoa heard the flute, she ran down to the water to find a boat. But there was none. Crying, she returned home. The next night was also dark. Once again she couldn't find a boat. When the girl heard her lover's flute, she decided to swim to the island and to marry the man who had won her heart. Paragraph Six. Hinemoa entered the water. It was very cold. There was no moon and she couldn't see the island. But she swam on and on listening to the music. It was a dangerous adventure. Gradually Hinemoa got tired and wasn't able to swim any more. She cried out in the darkness. Just then the moon came out from behind the clouds, and the girl saw that she was near the island. Paragraph Seven. A few minutes later she felt the earth under her feet and suddenly realized that it had become warm: she was near a hot spring! In the warm water she quickly recovered her strength. Soon she was quite herself again. The sound of music helped her to find her sweetheart. Hinemoa and Tutanekai got married and lived happily ever after. And the hot spring which gave her life and strength back is known even to this day as Hinemoa's Bath. The girl's confession. The father's final word. Desperate decision. Guided to the island. Father and daughter. Mother Nature coming to rescue. Winning the girl's heart. Life on the island.
