FyodorMikhailovichDostoevskywasborninMoscowin1821. Hewasthesonofretiredmilitarysurgeon, whohadasmallestate, andwaseducatedathomeuntilthedeathofhismotherin1837.Thatsameyear, heandhisbrother, Mikhail, weresenttoMilitaryEngineeringAcademyinSt.Petersburgbyhissomewhatsternandoppressivefather.WhileDostoevskywasstillatmilitaryschoolhisfatherdiedandtherewererumoursthathewasassassinatedbyhisserfs, butthiswasneverproven.Itseemsmorelikelythathediedofastroke.

DostoevskygraduatedfromtheMilitaryEngineeringAcademyasanengineer, butknewthatacareerinthearmywasn'tsuitableforhim.Hewishedtopursuehisinterestinliterature.In1844, thankstoasmallincomefromhisfather'sestate, hewasabletoresignfromthearmyanddevotehisenergiestowriting.Hisfirstnovel, PoorFolk, waspublishedin1846andwassoonfollowedbyasecond, TheDouble.

ItwasaroundthistimethatDostoevskystartedtakinganactiveinterestinpolitics, andthiswoulddeterminemanythingsinhislifeoverthecomingyears.HejoinedagroupofutopiansocialistscalledthePetrashevskyCirclethatusedtoholdpoliticalmeetingsinthehomeofaneccentricnamedPetrashevsky.Unfortunately, thesecretpolicehadplacedaspyinthegroupandontheeveningof23rdApril, 1849, Dostoevskywasarrestedalongwithothermenandsentencedtodeath.Hewasn'texecuted, butspentthenextfouryearsinahardlabourcampinSiberiawithcriminalswhohadbeenconvictedofmurder.Onhisreleasehewasforcedtojointhearmyasacommonsoldier.In1857, DostoevskymarriedMariaIsaevaandlaterresignedfromthearmy.Dostoevsky'stimeinSiberiahadaprofoundeffectonhimandhereturnedtoSt.Petersburgin1859amonarchistandadevoutfolloweroftheRussianOrthodoxChurch.Duringthe1860sDostoevskywouldpublishthreeworksbasedinonewayoranotheronhisexperienceinSiberia, themostpoignantbeingTheHouseoftheDead(1860), afictionalaccountofprisonlife.HetravelledtoEuropeandcontinuedtowrite, butafterthedeathofhiswifeandhisbrotherhebecameobsessedwithgamblinganddrinking.In1864, hepublishedoneofhisgreatestworksentitledNotesfromtheUndergroundwhichbeginswiththenarrator'swords "lamasickman ...Iamaspitefulman," andinwhichDostoevskysatirisescontemporarysocialandpoliticalviews.

Dostoevskymarriedagainin1867shortlyaftercompletinghismasterpieceCrimeandPunishment(1866).HethenwroteanumberofotherinterestingworkssuchasTheIdiot(1868-69)andThePossessed(1872).HediedinSt.Petersburgon9thFebruary, 1881.
