As Moscow awaits the 9th May many pay their respects to Soviet soldiers who fought in World War II. To mark Victory Day, St George's ribbons are being given away around the city. The ribbon of St George is one of the most military symbols in Russia, and it is worn to the Great Patriotic War. The black- and orange-striped ribbon derives its colours from the Russian imperial coat of arms. It was also on the Order of St George, established in 1789 as the highest military in Russia. The distinction passed on to the Soviet army and the medal was awarded to the soldiers and officers who part in combat actions during the war. The St George's Ribbon campaign was by RIA Novosti in 2005 to young people about the Great Patriotic War, in which every single family lost a member. The ribbons became popular and could be seen all over town. Even TV wear the ribbon on Victory Day.
