About 1800 years ago, certain adventurous chief led his people to island of Rapa Nui where they lived in isolation from Polynesians for many generations. They called their home the centre of the world. About century ago, Tahitian visited the land and called it Rapa Nui ("Big Rapa") because the island looked like a big copy of smaller Polynesian island called Rapa. This is how Easter Island, its Polynesian people and the language came to be called Rapa Nui. They've lived on this remote island since at least 12th century, when they made famous iconic statues. Rapa Nui are conservative people. One of their brightest traditions is tobogganing down grass slope of volcano on banana-tree trunk. This event usually coincides with Tapati festival which is contest of dance, drama, cookery, song and sport taking place at the start of each February. The festival is organised for Rapa Nui in Rapa Nui language. The whole celebration is very different from traditional going to opera. The musicians mostly play trumpets made from seashells, but the impression is no worse than at Covent Garden in London. Local traditions reflect the independent nature of this culture where people for 500 years had believed they were only people left on Earth. Isn't this unusual phenomenon?
