A good story
I have never been keen on travelling. When I was a kid, I enjoyed reading stories about Robinson Crusoe and the Treasure Island, but I have never thought about round-the-earth voyage. The spirit of adventure runs in my father’s family. There are family legends about his ancestors taking part in different journeys in Africa or long expeditions to Antarctica. The evidence for it is the black and white photo of my grandpa on board of the ship “Calypso”, standing next to Jacques-Yves Cousteau - a legendary traveller, researcher and the inventor of aqualung.
Although it all looks exciting and captivating at first sight, neither mum nor me share dad’s passion for adventures. We certainly try to look happy and enthusiastic about all his bungee jumping or diving ideas. “I am going to Black Lake tomorrow,” dad said while we were having a peaceful Saturday breakfast. “Anyone with me?”
We were supposed to be very glad. It meant walking for about 3 hours along the desert country, getting through the forest, mosquitoes, wet grass, leaves in the hair.
“I’d love to”, mum said, “But I promised Mrs. Jackson to drive her to hospital tomorrow”. “If you want, I’ll phone her and say we’ll go another time.”
“Oh, no”, said dad. “A promise is a promise”. And he focused his eyes on me. I understood that there was no excuse for me.
“There is no need to wake mum early in the morning, I’ll pack the things right after dinner”, I said. My parents looked at me with admiration. Dad liked my spirit of adventure, mum — my ability to sacrifice for other people's sake. I was a good daughter.
