Strategies and useful tips

Read the statements very carefully and point out the keywords to help you focus on what to listen for.

The questions follow the order of the information in the recording.

Do not confuse FALSE and NOT STATED. Be particularly careful with Not stated answers: information about this is just not in the text.

Remember that answers should be based on information in the text, not what you personally think or know.

If any of the statements are connected with feelings/opinions, think about how these might be expressed.

Be careful with negatives in the statements.

Listen and begin answering. Don't expect to be able to answer everything during the first listen. Finish answering when listening for the second time.

Check your answers: have you answered every question?

Script: Alexithymia

Doctor: Good afternoon, Mrs Jones, please come in.

Mrs Jones: Hello, Doctor.

Doctor: Thank you for coming, I think we are waiting for a difficult conversation.

Mrs Jones: What's wrong with Daniel?

Doctor: We have conducted a number of researches, including X-rays and MRI of the brain, and other tests, in which Daniel himself participated with your permission, and the results are as follows: your son has alexithymia.

Mrs Jones: And what is it?

Doctor: Remember, you said that when communicating with you, with friends and teachers at school, the boy does not feel joy, almost doesn't laugh, if he is offended, he does not show anger and from the outside, it seems that he does not participate in social life? The reason for this is just alexithymia.

Mrs Jones: I thought it was his temperament and character trait. Is indifference a disease?

Doctor: It's not really a disease. It's just that your son has an inability to recognize his own feelings. He does not know what fear, empathy and even sympathy are.

Mrs Jones: How did you find out about this?

Doctor: Daniel has a deficiency of certain areas of the brain, especially the sensory department, it has the shape of an almond, here it is, in the picture. This department of the brain is responsible for emotions, impressions, for reflexes that are sent to the body, these are gestures, facial expressions, body movements. He has no such reflexes.

Mrs Jones: I often do not understand his behaviour. His friend also told me that Dan is not fish or meat. It's hard to make him laugh, to make him angry, he has no object of sympathy. He doesn't like anyone at school.

Doctor: Yes, these are all signs of alexithymia.

Mrs Jones: Can it be cured?

Doctor: Not until the end. This disease is associated with intrauterine development, it is not acquired, but congenital. We can offer psychotherapy that will ease the course of the disease and help you accept your son, despite his peculiarity.

Mrs Jones: And will society accept him?

Doctor: You see, it's not that the boy is closed or afraid to make contact. And this does not mean that he is uninitiative and detached. He just doesn't know what is needed and how to show emotion. He does not need it for contact with the outside world.

Mrs Jones: Is he capable of friendship? For love?

Doctor: Of course!

It just doesn't manifest itself in the way we are used to seeing.

Mrs Jones: Yes, I understand.

Doctor: Let's meet together with Daniel next week and talk. I'll sign you up for Wednesday, okay?

Mrs Jones: Yes, thank you, Doctor.

Doctor: Have a good day, Mrs Jones.
