The value of actively using the language

In an early and important study, Merrill Swain, A______________, examined native English-speaking students B______________.

The students were exposed to French on a daily basis, both in class and in the surrounding community. However, the curriculum didn't place much emphasis on active speaking and writing in the language, so the students' comprehension skills far exceeded their speaking and writing skills.
