Presenter Sally Hello, and welcome back to the show. We are discussing the environment and our carbon footprint with our guest, Sally, who is an expert in the issues of ecology. So, Sally, why are environmental problems vital nowadays? Too many people consume too much, and when we overconsume things like food and plastic products, we are going to impact the environment in ways like deforestation. What is a carbon footprint? It is greenhouse gases a single person creates, along with what an organisation produces. These will lead to the Earth becoming hotter and hotter and the environment will become more damaged by it, like soil depletion and droughts. How does the transportation of goods influence the environment? Too much fuel is used as well as too many goods are lost, spoiled, or expired on the journey to their destination. This will impact how much food waste we have overall as well as the costs of producing these foods. Why is growing coffee and chocolate ecologically unfriendly? The developing countries must cut down forests and grow crops in the fields to earn money. The illegal deforestation industry will also cut down trees for timber. This is going to cause problems with the environment that is going to lead to the loss of land for natural animals. How can we affect the environment by consuming plenty of meat? People use too much water to grow corn and feed the cattle they are going to use for meat. The cows and pigs produce plenty of greenhouse gases that will damage the environment. Also, forests are cut down to grow corn and to make room for the animals. Thus, this is going to lead to soil depletion as a result. What might happen if we do not stop consuming so much? Well, the Earth will become more polluted, which means the air will be dirty and hard to breathe. We all will have poor health and will not enjoy a healthy environment. A lot of species will go extinct. We could prevent this if we pay attention to our eating habits. Thank you Sally for your insight into this growing issue.
Sally mentions the following ideas:
Growing coffee means cutting down trees.
Chocolate trees make the air cleaner.
Forests disappear because we buy too much.
Food must be only uncooked.
Many goods go bad during shipping.
Our food does not influence the environment.
